Minecraft Color Codes & Formatting
Transform your Minecraft world with color! This visual guide provides all the formatting codes you need to customize chat, signs, books, and server MOTDs.
Minecraft Color Codes Reference
In Minecraft, colors are applied using the section symbol (§) followed by a specific character. On many servers, you can also use the ampersand (&) as a substitute.
Special Formatting Codes
Formatting codes allow you to change the style of your text beyond just color.
How to Use Codes in Minecraft
1. In-Game Chat (Multiplayer)
On most servers, you can use the & symbol followed by the code. For example, typing &6Hello World will display "Hello World" in gold. Note that you may need specific permissions from the server admin to use colors.
2. Signs and Books
In Java Edition, you typically cannot type the § symbol directly into a sign or book. You must either use a plugin that supports & codes or use external tools like our Item Lore Generator.
3. Command Blocks & Server Console
When using commands like /tellraw or /title, it is best to use JSON formatting instead of section symbols for better reliability across versions.
/tellraw @a {"text":"System Glitch Detected","color":"red","obfuscated":true}
Pro-Tip: Code Stacking
You can stack color and formatting codes together. Always put the color code first!
